Thought Leadership in Action: Dr. Sherri Cox to Present on Avian Influenza and Response Readiness at IOSSC 2026

We are proud to announce that our Medical Director, Dr. Sherri Cox, will be featured as a prominent speaker and session chair at the upcoming International Oil Spill Science Conference (IOSSC) 2026 in Montreal, Quebec, from October 13–16, 2026. Wildlife oil spill response and preparedness is a foundational pillar of our work at the National Wildlife Centre (NWC). Dr. Cox’s inclusion in this prestigious international forum underscores our commitment to advancing scientific rigor and global standards in wildlife conservation. Dr. Cox will be lending her expertise to three critical areas during the conference:

      • Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in Oil Spill Response: Addressing the complex biosecurity and veterinary challenges of managing infectious diseases during wildlife rescue operations.
      • From Rehabilitation to Readiness: Exploring strategies for Strengthening Canada’s Oiled Wildlife Response Network to ensure rapid, coordinated, and effective national action.
      • Session Chair for the Wildlife Workshop: Leading global experts through collaborative discussions on the latest innovations in wildlife triage and care.

“Participating in international forums like IOSSC allows us to share Canada’s specialized expertise while collaborating on global solutions,” says Dr. Cox. “With shifting environmental challenges and emerging biosecurity risks like HPAI, building a resilient, ready response network is more critical than ever.”

Wildlife Disease Association International Conference 2026
In 2026, National Wildlife Centre’s Medical Director, Dr. Cox co-presented ‘Call of the Wild: WDA Wildlife Rehabilitative Medicine Workshop‘ at the Wildlife Disease Association International Conference, a major full-day global event that brought together wildlife rehabilitators, veterinarians, researchers, students, and conservation professionals from around the world to share knowledge and advance the care of wild animals.
Dr. Cox continues to champion the global advancement of wildlife medicine – not only through the compassionate care she and her team provides to the thousands of wild animals that come through NWC each year, but also by sharing her vital expertise with international wildlife professionals across borders and continents. We were deeply honoured to have her represent NWC on the world stage, sharing Canadian wildlife expertise with a truly global audience and helping shape the future of veterinary care worldwide.
