This Spotted salamander was discovered inside a sump pump at a ski club north of our wildlife hospital. Although he wasn’t injured, he was trapped in an environment where he would not have survived the winter.
He was brought to our hospital, where he spent the colder months in a safe, carefully managed environment that met the unique needs of amphibians. Over the winter, he remained healthy and was able to overwinter safely in our care.
We’re happy to share that this little salamander was successfully released back into the wild in April, when warmer temperatures and suitable conditions returned. Thanks to his rescue, he was given a second chance to continue his important role in the forest ecosystem.
Did you know? Every Spotted salamander has a unique pattern of bright yellow spots, much like a fingerprint. These fascinating amphibians also absorb water and oxygen through their skin, making them especially sensitive to pollution and changes in their environment. Healthy forests, clean water, and protected wetlands are essential for their survival.
